DBRS Publishes Updated Global Methodology for Rating Life and P&C Insurance Companies and Insurance Organizations

Insurance Organizations
January 24, 2018

DBRS Limited (DBRS) released its updated “Global Methodology for Rating Life and P&C Insurance Companies and Insurance Organizations” (the Methodology) after the closure of a public Request for Comments (RFC) period that ended on December 27, 2017, per the press release “DBRS Requests Comments on Proposed 2017 Update to Global Insurance Methodology,” dated November 27, 2017. The Methodology presents the criteria on which global insurance company ratings are based.

During the RFC period, DBRS received several comments. The comments received primarily concerned clarifications regarding the definitions of assets that DBRS considers to be liquid and non-liquid, as well as the constituent components of higher-risk assets.

In response to these comments, DBRS made certain clarifications to the version published for RFC on November 27, 2017. DBRS published the Methodology in final form and it is thus effective as at January 24, 2018.

These additional changes following the RFC publication are not material and no ratings are expected to change for both the initial changes and this set of changes.

All comments received during the RFC period have been published to the DBRS website, except in cases where confidentiality was requested by the respondent.

DBRS criteria and methodologies are publicly available on its website www.dbrs.com under Methodologies.
